Hyperglycaemia

Hyperglycaemia is what happens when the blood glucose levels raise too high.

Symptoms

  • increased thirst and urination
  • headaches
  • lack of energy / lethargy
  • stomach pains

Causes

  • missing an insulin dose, or taking too little insulin
  • eating more carbohydrate than usual
  • over-treating a hypo
  • stress
  • being unwell
  • having an infection

Treatment

  • drink plenty of sugar-free fluids
  • take extra insulin, if necessary
  • test your blood regularly to monitor your blood glucose
  • test for ketones
