Symptoms of diabetes

There a variety of symptoms that can be experienced before diabetes is diagnosed, some people may have all of the symptoms others just one or two.
The symptoms include:
- going to the toilet a lot, to pass urine, especially at night
- being very thirsty and drinking a lot
- tiredness
- weight loss
- regular episodes of thrush
- blurred vision
- slow healing of cuts or wounds
These symptoms can occur in both people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. With type 1, they develop quickly, usually a few weeks but with type 2, they can be less obvious.
In some cases, a person can have type 2 diabetes for years without knowing and it may only be picked up at a routine check. The symptoms will usually subside once treatment for the condition has commenced.
If you have any of these symptoms or think you may have diabetes, speak to your GP.
Are you at risk of type 2 diabetes?
Many people are at risk of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes UK has produced a risk assessment tool to establish if you are at risk.
